Susan Gayle Faw Faw Blair

Susan Gayle Faw Faw Blair passed from this life on Saturday, 25 January 2014 at her home in Biloxi, Mississippi, after nearly a year-long battle with cancer. Susan was born 20 December 1957 in Perry, Oklahoma, to parents Marie (Scott) and Louis V. Faw Faw Jr.

Susan found her life’s calling in the natural sciences, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Oklahoma State University in 1984. Susan began her professional career soon afterwards in Biloxi, MS, serving as an interpreter and leader of the education and outreach programs for the U.S. National Park Service’s Gulf Coast National Seashore preservation efforts. There she helped to bring knowledge and understanding of America’s wildlife and preservation of her natural wonders to the general public and especially to children. She co-authored several educational books and pamphlets and hosted and narrated numerous informational videos on nature conservancy and the local seashore ecosystems.

Susan joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Complex as Environmental Education Specialist for Leavenworth, Entiat and Winthrop National Fish Hatcheries. There, she was a key organizer and coordinator of public outreach activities. Most notably, she served on the Core Planning Team for the award winning Wenatchee River Salmon Festival. Salmon runs are central to the local economy and especially to the Native American tribes of the area, including the Colville, Nez Perce and Yakama peoples. As a Native American herself, Susan was uniquely suited to bringing together the traditional ways of the native peoples by educating thousands and sharing the cultural significance of salmon to the Pacific Northwest and her north central Washington communities.

It was in Leavenworth where Susan met and married her husband, Michael Allen Blair, on New Year’s Day 2006 in Las Vegas.

Being an Oklahoma native, Susan preferred the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast to the deep snows of the northwest winters. She returned to Biloxi where she remained as the District Interpreter for the Gulf Coast National Seashore and where she continued to organize the Biloxi Earth Day celebrations among many other activities.

Susan is survived by her loving husband of eight years, Michael, both her parents, sisters Sharon Luttrell of Noble, OK, and Sandra Faw Faw of Gulfport, MS, her brother Steve Faw Faw of Oklahoma City, OK, many nieces and nephews, and her “kids” – a veritable menagerie of ducks and geese, dogs and cats, and several other of God’s creatures she held dear to her heart.

A gathering of friends and family will be held at the home of Corky and Duane Broaddus, 8189 East Leavenworth Road, Sunday, February 23, 2014 from 1-4 PM.

Investing in Our Community

One of the core values of the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival is providing high quality natural resource education to our communities. To foster this belief we “pay it forward” by investing in local students who have a passion for natural resources and want to further their education in this field.

Salmon Fest is proud to announce that Nathaniel (Drew) Carleton was presented with the 2014 Nancy Duree Natural Resource Scholarship.

Drew’s entire class joined him in his excitement as he accepted the $1500 scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding North Central Washington graduating high school senior who is continuing their education in a natural resource field at an accredited college or university.

Drew Carleton

Chelan County PUD’s Bob Bauer, Scholarship Committee member, presents a check to Drew Carleton.

Carleton, son of Robert and Terrie Carleton of Manson, Washington, is a graduating senior from Chelan High School. He has been accepted to Gonzaga University and plans to earn a degree in biology and specialize in environmental education.

Carleton was selected from a field of superior candidates, but his outstanding academic record, references and personal essay were the determining factors in his selection. Carleton’s future goals are clearly defined as he stated, “I plan to study environmental education and biology. Eventually, I want to teach environmental studies and biology at the community college level.”

The Nancy Duree Natural Resource Scholarship was created in honor of Nancy Duree, a Wenatchee River Salmon Festival Core Team member devoted to the educational mission of the festival and an active participant in the festival from its inception in 1991. Nancy was a strong believer in promoting the value of higher education and was passionate about conserving and connecting people with the outdoors.

This is the 24th year for the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival, held annually at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. The festival is open to registered school classes September 18 & 19, and open to the entire community free-of-charge September 20, 2014.

75th Anniversary of Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Celebrated

From the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery

Leavenworth, Wash.—This year is the 75th anniversary of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery! We invite everyone to celebrate our history at the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival, held September 17-19 this year. An exhibit will be on display, and volunteers from the Upper Valley Museum will be on hand to help tell our story.

1947 Hatchery Building and Ponds

Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Building and Ponds, 1947

The hatchery was authorized in 1937 and built from 1939-1940. It was at that time the largest salmon hatchery in the world! Entiat and Winthrop National Fish Hatcheries opened in 1941 and 1942, creating a complex of hatcheries working together. The purpose of the hatcheries was to keep salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River system after dams like the Grand Coulee were built. Leavenworth NFH currently raises 1.2 million juvenile spring Chinook salmon every year, releasing them into Icicle Creek.

In 1998, Leavenworth NFH was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Visitors today can see the nursery, adult holding ponds, fish ladder, raceways, rearing ponds, and other features of an active hatchery, still operating from the original buildings.

Come take a walk through time and explore the ambitious past, the busy present, and the hopeful future of our relationship with salmon in Washington State! The visitor center is open every day throughout the summer, and staff and volunteers are ready to answer questions. Call 509-548-2915 for more information.

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. We are both a leader and trusted partner in fish and wildlife conservation, known for our scientific excellence, stewardship of lands and natural resources, dedicated professionals and commitment to public service.
